CENTURY 21 BARIBEAU AGENCY - A BRIEF HISTORY
"From Painting Signs to Selling Islands"
"We sold an island on the telephone the other day. It was bought by an advertising agency in Texas to give away at the opening of a new shopping center."
It was just an offhand remark, spoken by Henry M. Baribeau Sr. in 1957 upon the 30th anniversary of the Baribeau Agency.
To Henry M. Baribeau Sr., Brunswick real estate broker, selling an island to a Texas advertising agency was all in a day's work.
There was a time, though, when he would not have been so casual about the transaction. Over eighty years ago, in 1927, Henry Sr. was employed in a grocery store (Tondreau’s Market) when he decided to go into real estate business in his spare time to pick up a little extra money. For 10 years he continued to work at the store and conducted his business in the evenings and on Sundays. His hours in the grocery store were 6 AM to 6 PM. from Monday to Thursday, and until 9 PM. on Fridays and until 11 PM. on Saturdays.
Besides managing the produce department in the store, he also painted most of the store's advertising signs. His sign-painting experience also helped him in real estate brokerage business. He painted his own "For Sale" signs and used a little hand printing press to turn out his descriptive literature.
In the year 2011, over eighty four years later, CENTURY 21 Baribeau Agency is a 20+ person, full service real estate brokerage firm.
Henry Baribeau had been a major force in developing new residential areas in Brunswick and had become well known as a banker, appraiser, and developer. He earned national attention when an article by Max Gunther in a prominent national magazine described him as "Another island loving real estate man... who has so many islands to sell, both on the ocean and inland lakes, that he publishes a special pamphlet to describe them."
That was the only mention of Baribeau in the 1965 national magazine article, "Big Bargains in Hideaway Islands." But it led to Henry M. Baribeau and Sons Real Estate Agency being flooded with letters and queries from nearly every state in the nation, including Alaska.
Henry Baribeau was a charter member of the Maine Real Estate Association, the forerunner of today’s Realtor Association, was president of the original Brunswick Chamber of Commerce, was a past president of Brunswick Rotary Club, a past president of the New England Chapter of the Society of Industrial Realtors and had served as trustee of the Brunswick Savings Institution and director of the Brunswick Savings & Loan Association.
After the Baribeau Agency became CENTURY 21 Baribeau Agency in 1979, Henry Sr. attended the CENTURY 21 beginners’ course, 2&1, and was at the time the oldest attendee ever to take this course. He distinguished himself as someone always willing to change and accept new ideas when it came to real estate. He passed away in 1983.
In the 1950's his two sons, Henry Jr. and Richard, joined the business. Both worked with their father during the summer while they attended Bowdoin College and became full-time members of the agency after graduation.
Henry, Jr. (Hank), who started work with his father in 1952, took over the running and operation of the growing office. His specialty was as a fee appraiser and general manager of the corporation. He expanded the company into 3 offices located in Brunswick, Bath and Wiscasset. Hank is a former incorporator of Key Bank, past President of the Androscoggin Board of Realtors, former president of the Brunswick Rotary Club, and an avid sports fisherman. He currently works part-time for the Company.
Hank's younger brother, Richard Sr., who joined in 1957, was past president of the Maine Association of Realtors (1965) and was named State of Maine "Realtor of the Year" in 1967. He was a corporator of the former Brunswick Savings Institution and president of Tri-Bar, builders of Acorn Homes. In the mid-1980's he left the company to work for CENTURY 21 of New England located in Burlington, Mass. He then worked for CENTURY 21 as regional director in the Southeast region.
Hank's oldest son, Mike, was asked to join the company as an appraisal assistant and general handyman in 1976. He decided he liked the Real Estate Business and became a sales associate in 1978. Mike did most of the advertising for the company and helped improve some of the office systems. Mike was instrumental in discovering that the real estate industry as a whole was changing and that joining a franchised group would help the image of the company. The Baribeau Agency became CENTURY 21 Baribeau Agency in 1979. The Agency had also expanded and needed additional management help so Mike became a branch manager in the Wiscasset Branch and then later on in the Bath office. Mike has also distinguished himself in several leadership positions, becoming President of the Merrymeeting Board of Realtors in 1984 and in 2011, Regional Vice-President and first Vice-President of the Maine Association of Realtors in 1985 and 1986. And was honored as Realtor of the Year in 2009. Mike served as Vice-President of the Merrymeeting Multiple Listing Service, President and Director of the Bath Rotary Club in 1995/96 and again as President 2010-2011 and President of the Maine Brokers Council in both 1994 and 1995 and again in 2000. He is now serving as the Treasurer of the Council. He was also Chairman of the Coastal Economic Development Finance Committee. Mike is currently Chairman of the Topsham Assessment Review Board. Michael Baribeau is currently Owner and President of Baribeau Agency, Inc. and Designated Broker of CENTURY 21 Baribeau Agency. His wife, Dianna, is vice-president of the Corporation and operates the property management division, Rentex, which was established by Mike and Dianna in the early 80's.
